Happy Holidays
Colorado is an amazing state to live in. One day we have warm, sunny temperatures of 60 degrees F and the next it falls to -2 degrees F and snow just in time for a White Christmas! Now we are back into the 20's F and if there's one thing consistent about CO, that would be the brilliant sunshine we receive! We are so lucky to be living in a beautiful area. BookCliff Vineyards is practicing some new techniques this winter to insulate the grapevines. John and Ulla made a visit down to Palisade to work with our Vineyard Manager, Prescott, on laying down the vines and covering them with hay. Our goal is to keep them warm to survive the cold winter! BookCliff is looking forward to 2015 and we can't wait to kickoff the New Year with some upcoming dinners with local Chefs, here at the winery! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
Cheers!

Touch of Red Release
No need to panic anymore! Touch of Red is getting bottled tomorrow and released this weekend! This sweet, delightful wine is a popular puppy and she sold out this year! We went for a couple of months without it until we finished making the wine from our 2014 grapes. It exhibits bright, fruity sweet flavors with a smooth, yummy finish! It's a wonderful wine to enjoy with chocolate covered strawberries, cheesecake or just by itself!
Cheers!

Visit to Washington Wine Country
The Tri-Cities of Washington State hosted their 37th Annual Wine Festival and I was lucky enough to attend this year! My husband and I met up with friends who work for Columbia Crest and 14 Hands Winery during the event. They had everything there from food by local catering companies and restaurants, to local breweries to 71 wineries! You could taste anything from a semi-sweet, sparkling Rose by Treveri Cellars to the most textured, silky red wine off of Red Mountain by Monte Scarlatto! There was also a live band and a silent auction in the middle of the convention center for entertainment. Working with Colorado fruit and wine, I always try to keep my palate fresh by tasting wines from other growing regions, and this was the perfect opportunity to do so! If you get a chance to visit Washington, check out the new 14 Hands facility in Prosser- you won't be disappointed!
Cheers!

Spooky Happenings at the Winery
There are some spooky events happening at the winery on this Halloween day. With a chill running through the cellar and the smell of fermenting grapes, you might see something unusual.
Hanging out in the tasting room is less scary than the cellar! Bwhahahahaha. We hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween this year! Cheers!

Escoffier visits BookCliff Vineyards
BookClliff Vineyards was happy to host the students from Escoffier School of Culinary Arts for an afternoon of Winery Harvest education! They were able to see grape juice fermenting into wine and finished wine getting pressed off. John talked about crush and all aspects of the winemaking process. After the tour, everyone (over 21) was able to taste the wine made from our own Colorado grapes. We certainly enjoyed having you and being a part of your education!

BookCliff Vineyards at 63rd Farm with Heros Like Us
We had a chance to join Heros like Us at their On the Farm Off the Hook dinner at the 63rd Street Farm. This was a five course dinner at the farm each course paired wine wine, beer and spirits from Boulder County - BookCliff Vineyards, Upslope Brewing, S&L Distilling. The chefs from Colt & Gray and Table 6 prepared the dishes. All the vegetables came from the farm. One of the courses was a whole goat slowly cooked served with carrots, parsnip and beets. Heros Like Us is all about providing great food to everyone and it does this by putting on charity food and wine events. Check it out at heroslike.us and eat for a good cause.

Colorado Mountain Winefest
What a beautiful weekend it turned out to be in Palisade for the annual Colorado Mountain Winefest. We hosted a farm to table dinner Friday night, then was up early with the roosters on Saturday morning, setting up for Winefest! Thank you to everyone who attended the weekend with us! We loved having you and enjoyed getting to spend more time with you! Eric and Jill with BlackCat put on a beautiful dinner! Ask anyone who was there and they'd say the same. The weather was absolutely perfect the entire weekend and if you missed going this year, sign up for our newsletter to receive updates for the upcoming dinners and next year's winefest dinner. Now, we are back in Boulder, ready to receive fruit this week from the vineyards in Palisade. Muscat Blanc and Viognier have already started fermenting in the tanks and we can't wait to get the other varietals into the cellar! We hope everyone had a great weekend as well! Cheers!

Bottling Malbec
On this cold and wet September day we bottled a warm and dry Malbec for you to enjoy. The bottling crew feels this will be a wonderful paring with Prime Rib, Grilled Lamb or Italian Spicy Sausage with a bold red sauce. We are quickly nearing harvest and the grapes are ripening quite nicely. We are excited about the first grapes of the year which we believe will be Muscat Blanc. The wine festival is just around the corner and the preparations for the Feast in the Vineyard are well under way.

Harvest Season
Harvest season has arrived! John and Ulla have been down to Palisade quite a bit this summer, walking the vineyards with Prescott- our vineyard manager, to estimate crop production for this year's harvest! Muscat Blanc will be the first varietal picked and trucked up to Boulder to kickoff harvest! We can't wait to start receiving fruit in a couple of weeks! Come on over to the winery this September and October to check out the crush pad! Cheers!

Eat. Drink. Watch Movies.
A unique wine and dine movie theater just opened last Friday, August 1st, 2014 in Louisville, CO. Cinebarre of Louisville offers luxurious and comfortable seating with table service during your movie. We are excited to be a part of their wine menu and excited for you to experience a new way of dining and entertainment! For events, specials and movie times, go to Cinebarre-Boulder.
Press Release August 4, 2014
BOULDER, Colo. — Going to the movies in this Rocky Mountain community just became a lot more satisfying for fans of Colorado wine. Cinebarre, the national cinema eatery chain, is pouring Colorado-grown and -vinted wines from Bookcliff Vineyards and Infinite Monkey Theorem at the concept theater it opened here on August 1st in the desirable suburb of Louisville. The previous night, more than 600 VIPs and film enthusiasts attended a Hollywood-style premiere party complete with searchlights, red carpet, bubbly and swag bags. Among the celebrities posing for the paparazzi at the sleek bar were John Ratzenberger (Cliff) and George Wendt (Norm) of Cheers fame. Located at 1164 West Dillon Road, this latest incarnation of the Cinebarre brand complements a sister theater in the greater Denver metropolitan area. Both locations deliver a unique cinematic experience by screening first-run feature films in an atmosphere akin to a chic bistro, albeit with plush seating and surround sound. Combining a love of movies with a night on the town, Cinebarre has enhanced the moviegoing experience with adult food and drink options that appeal to a sophisticated audience. Cinebarre Boulder is the first such theater in the area. "We give the civilized, mature person the experience of watching a movie the way it was meant to be: in a fullservice dinner and movie setting without the distractions of the standard ‘mall’ movie theater," says Cinebarre founder and CEO Terrell Braly.
Cinebarre Boulder is anything but ordinary. Braly and his team have dramatically transformed the 45,000-square-foot space once occupied by the Colony Square Cinema, reinventing it with unique Cinebarre flair. The metamorphosis from tired and outdated to fresh and modern is notable: Eleven luxuriously refurbished theaters now occupy the highly polished, black-and-silver-themed venue. Each theater boasts bench tables; spacious, richly upholstered seating; state-of-the-art screens; all-digital technology; Dolby 5.1 surround sound; and Cinebarre’s signature tableside service. A talented culinary staff prepares each menu item to order in the gleaming commercial kitchen. Even the popcorn is over-the-top: popped from wholesome kernels, it’s drizzled with real butter or truffle oil and famously served in a silver bowl. The expansive bar that anchors the lounge area features 24 beers on tap (including a wealth of regional microbrews), an enhanced wine list (with bottles hailing from Colorado to France) and premium liquors.
An extensive food menu — headlined by tantalizing starters, fresh-baked artisan pizzas, delectable gourmet burgers and house-made desserts — complements the bevy of drinks. Classic candy choices also populate the menu, along with an array of non-alcoholic beverages, shakes and floats. A dedicated Cinebarre Brunch menu is served on Sundays. Because Braly grew up here, opening Cinebarre Boulder is particularly meaningful to him, and he spared no expense in creating the ultimate movie experience for residents of his hometown. With the massive remodel behind him, Braly celebrated the milestone with friends, family and festive drinks. Boulder-area theatergoers can now toast every movie they see with a glass of their favorite adult beverage, too.
Whether one prefers a cocktail, wine, beer or a soda, watching a movie at Cinebarre Boulder means settling into the embrace of a lavishly upholstered chair, placing one’s order with a server, and then relaxing and enjoying the movie as each course unobtrusively appears — inordinate luxuries that eclipse the comforts of home.

Experience Wine in Harmony
BookCliff Vineyards' winemakers are diligently working hard to put together the next blends for our future releases. One includes the beautiful and bold Ensemble. It is a red wine consisting of Bordeaux varietals, bringing forth complexity with ever evolving layers throughout the mouth. My favorite characteristics are the velvety texture and jammy fruit notes it exhibits. This blend will certainly please the palate and leave you wanting more. Vineyard Irrigation
John, Owner/Winemaker at BookCliff Vineyards |
BookCliff Vineyards is excited to irrigate with the new
microsprinkler system! The system is our latest addition and hangs in-line with
the vines, about 18 inches from the ground, providing water below the canopy.
This type of irrigation system is replacing the original surface irrigation
furrows used throughout the vineyards. Our soils are categorized as sandy loam,
clay. The microsprinklers will ensure efficient water penetration, allow for
cover crop flexibility and help drive salts away from the vines’ root zones.
Salts carry Potassium up the vine system, a result from the furrow system,
which resulted in higher pH in the fruit; the microsprinklers will help balance
the acid and sugar levels in the grapes by pushing salts away. Having the
ability to plant cover crops, such as clover, is satisfying, knowing the soils
are being provided with enough Nitrogen, which is important for the health of
the vineyards. Sprinkler systems are often used for cooling and frost/freeze
protection, which will hopefully increase fruit production, as Colorado has experienced winter frosts and crop damage. Overall, I think this is a great investment
for Colorado’s grapes and we hope to see progress in the vineyards! Cheers!

Impressive!
Congratulations to all the award winners at the 2014 Governor's Cup Colorado Winemaking Competition! What a perfect event to showcase the best wines of Colorado. Warren Winiarski happened to be one of the judges this year and was pleased with the varietals brought to the table. “I was truly impressed with the quality and
direction of Colorado’s wine producers. The industry has come a long way
since I made wine here 46 years ago! Quite a number of the wines I
tasted were beyond expressing merely the region but had the character of
classics.” said Warren Winiarski, 73' Cabernet Sauvignon winner of the
1976 Judgment of Paris tasting. BookCliff Vineyards won Gold medals for Malbec, Petit Verdot and Friday's Folly White. Every year, a Governor's Cup Case is assembled. This year, our own Malbec and Friday's Folly White were chosen as part of the 2014 collection. Again, congratulations to everyone who entered and we hope to try your wines soon! Great job and happy winemaking Colorado!! Cheers!

2012 Cabernet Franc Release
We've kept you waiting long enough! After a long, fun day of bottling with our staff and volunteers, Cabernet Franc 2012 is ready to be tasted and purchased! This varietal is one of the major grapes grown worldwide, and grows especially well in Colorado. It has been known to be a great competitor in wine judging events and as a Reserve label in Colorado wineries. Our 2012 exhibits nice raspberry, cherry and mocha notes on the nose. It also has some nice acidity on the palate to complement the dark fruit and smooth tannins. Barrel aged for 18 months in French Oak, this wine's many layers is sure to please your senses! Cheers!

No Rest for the Winemakers!
Winemakers really have no downtime in their industry. Harvest is the most exciting time of the year when all the fruit arrives! After harvest, winemakers are continuously monitoring the health of the wine, bottling new releases and bringing in new barrels for future vintages! Our Winemaker, John, is down in Palisade walking through BookCliff’s vineyards, making sure the vines are producing quality fruit for harvest 2014. Walking the vineyards early in the year and checking the vines will help John make better estimates on fruit yields for the coming months. Justin, our Assistant Winemaker, is busy washing new barrels, pumping wine into barrels and monitoring its health in the cellar! Everything our guys are doing right now are critical steps to ensure we bring in the right amount of fruit during September and October and have enough tank and barrel space for all products. Stop by the tasting room either Thursday or Friday to check out the action! Cheers!

Keeping Food & Wine Simple and Fun
Whenever you are trying to decide which wine to pair with a certain food, keep it simple. Follow a couple of easy rules and you will have a nice combination. Keep the pairing similar. You don't want to have one item overpower the other. If your food dish tends to be on the heavy side, pair it with a heavy, full-bodied wine. If you are serving a light, delicate dish, then pair it with a light, lovely wine. If you come across a tangy dish, think about a wine that will exhibit bright, zippy notes!
BookCliff Vineyards paired chocolate and wine last weekend for a special Valentine's event. We kept it simple with pairing a smooth, round Malbec with our smooth, soft cherry chocolate pieces. We had our sweet Touch of Red paired up with a sweeter white chocolate, containing dried fruits and nuts, and finally our Port with a coffee-style dark chocolate. Coming up in March, we will be hosting a wine and cheese pairing class. Here, you will be able to relax and have fun while pairing BookCliff wines with cheese from Haystack Mountain Goat Cheese. For more information and reservations, visit our events page. Happy pairing everyone! Cheers!

Happy Valentine's Day!
Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Here is a fun fact about this particular day: "The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine's Day." I thought this was quite interesting and neat that it happens!
Do you have any plans for this afternoon? Stop by BookCliff Vineyards Winery and Tasting Room on 1501 Lee Hill Road, Unit #17 in Boulder for Wine, Chocolate and Music! We will have wine pairings with chocolate from Concertos in Chocolates from 1:00-6:00pm and Jazz Piano from 4:00-6:00pm! Hope you are having a lovely day! Cheers!

Warm up with Chambourcin
Colorado has been experiencing some extremely cold temperatures. Many folks have had trouble starting their cars and keeping their homes warm with temperatures dropping into negative degrees. Palisade is typically warmer than Denver, including its surrounding areas. Boulder averages temperatures between 25-26 degrees F during January and February, while Palisade averages temperatures between 30-36 degrees F during the same months. The average annual snowfall in Palisade is 3.1 inches during February, compared to 12.7 inches in Boulder. BookCliff's vineyards are overseen by Prescott, our vineyard manager. He pays close attention to the conditions of the vines and works hard to bring forth the best crop possible. The winter is always worrisome with the vineyards and we can only hope for better results each year.
Chambourcin is one of our hybrid varietals that can withstand temperatures from 0 to -5 degrees F. It produces a dark purple wine, exhibiting notes of black cherries, spice and plum. Stop by our tasting room to check it out! Stay warm!
Cheers!

Custom White Blends
John is working with four restaurants to create custom white blends. Scroll over each name to visit their website:
The restaurant staff for each restaurant gets to experiment with the following wines from BookCliff:
Muscat Blanc
Cayuga
Viognier
Chardonnay
Riesling
After the blend in created, it will be sold and served at the restaurant.
This is an exciting time to blend and taste to see what ratios mix well together for a nice balanced wine. Usually several staff members come up to work with John for a fun session of mad mixing.

Congratulations to our very own Denver Broncos for making it to Super Bowl XLVIII! There has been quite a bit of hype with the match up between Denver and Seattle on February 2nd and we can't wait for kickoff! As you plan your Super Bowl party, think about which wines will go great with your jalapeno poppers or cheese dip! Our suggestion for spicy foods is BookCliff Vineyards Riesling! Wine & Food Pairing
Wine and food make a beautiful couple! Tonight, we are hosting dinner at the winery, featuring a menu from Black Cat Farm Table Bistro. The wines chosen to pair tonight are Black Cat Meritage, BookCliff Vineyards Malbec, Ensemble, Unoaked Chardonnay and Late Harvest Muscat Blanc. What an amazing experience to share dinner with our Owners and Winemaker of BookCliff Vineyards and renowned Chef from Black Cat. If you missed buying a ticket, no worries. We have three more dinners coming up on February 6, March 13 and April 10. Our next event will be a wine and cheese pairing experience. This will take place at the winery on February 7 at 6:30pm. During this experience, you will be able to sample six wines coupled with cheeses and appetizers from Haystack. Cheers!

Happy New Year!
We are excited to get 2014 off to a great start! Our 2013 Riesling was just bottled. This wine brings forth fresh green apple and pear notes with bright acidity! We also have many events coming up and have already sold out on a few wine and dinner pairings. Don't miss out on our first tasting room event: Wine and Prosciutto Flights on Saturday, February 1st. This event will feature smoked meats from Continental Sausage of Denver. Stop by the tasting room Thursday through Sunday for more information!
