BookCliff Vineyards Touch of Red for the New Year

The 2012 version of the Touch of Red flew out the door and we found ourselves without any more bottles to sell before Christmas. Though it is not quite Valentine's yet, we got to work on the new version of the Touch of Red. Usually the blend was dominated by Merlot. The sweet for the 2013 version is made from Cabernet Franc grapes. We also added some Syrah to give it more body. The new Touch of Red has beautiful ruby color with its usual sweetness and a zippy finish.

BookCliff Vineyards Warehouse and Flood Sale

We are glad that we are done with the hundred-year flood and make it part of our past.
Finishing harvest we finally had some time to deal with our comparatively minor flooding problem that left some wine bottles with labels that show the stains from the flood.
BookCliff Vineyards is hosting a warehouse wine sale to benefit the Mental Health Partners that had to temporarily relocate it's Boulder-based services because of the recent floods. BookCliff Vineyards will be selling bottles of wine for 30% to 50% off that have water damaged labels. 10% of the revenue from the sales will be donated to the Boulder County Mental Health Partners. In addition John Garlich and Ulla Merz, the owners of BookCliff Vineyards, will personally match any proceeds or donations from the event up to $500.00.

When: Saturday 11/16/2013 and Sunday 11/17/2013
Time: 1:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: 1501 Lee Hill Road #17, Boulder, Colorado 80304, BookCliff Vineyards winery & tasting room

BookCliff Vineyards Black Muscat Barrel Aged

Finally the Black Muscat is back. Back in February 2013 we embarked on our new bottle and label design for the Black Muscat, a dessert wine made from Black Muscat grapes and our own wine distilled. We decided on a new design using silk-screened bottles rather than a paper label. The entire process from design to production took much longer than anticipated. Last week we received the new bottles and we are very pleased with the result. I hope you like it too. Bottle and wine are a great match.

Wine and Cheese Pairing Class at BookCliff Vineyards

For the past month Haystack Goat Dairy and BookCliff Vineyards invited people to the winery for a wine and cheese pairing class. The class starts out with a welcome glass of Viognier. Haystack and BookCliff are two local gems that are dedicated to making an awesome local product and the two of them double up for a great experience. You get to taste six cheeses from fresh to wash rind perfectly paired with six wines (three red and three white) each accompanied with cold cuts and crackers from Cured in Boulder. You will learn about wine and cheese making from the people involved in doing it. The evening concludes with a light fare and more wine and every guest receives a courtesy gift.
Here is what some attendees said:
"This was an awesome experience overall. It is was well worth the price of the event as you left with a free bottle of wine and package of cheese. There was absolutely no pressure to buy anything else, but trust me, you'll want to!"

"Lots of good information, wines & cheeses were in abundance and wonderful!!"

Have a Blind Tasting Party

This is what we did just recently at BookCliff Vineyards. We got together and tasted five different white blends, which made for a fun and informative experience. We put all the bottles in brown bags and numbered them before we proceeded to taste. Here are some of the comments. For example our number two wine received the following two comments (1) Apples, nose is different from taste, (2) Good tart clean taste. Here are the wines we tasted:
  1. Evolution from Sokol Blosser
  2. Conundrum from Conundrum Wine
  3. 47-ten White from Canyon Wind
  4. Fly over White from Foris Winery
  5. Friday's Folly White from BookCliff Vineyards
You can have an entertaining evening with your friends. Go buy five or six wines, uncork, put them in brown bags, number and GO.

The Flagstaff Star Wine is Available

As our holiday tradition we release the Flagstaff Star wine every year. This year the wine is the 2010 Ensemble, a gold medal winner at the 2012 Governor's Cup and a Jefferson Cup winner at the Thirteenth Annual Jefferson Cup Invitational Wine Competition. The label shows the beautiful oil painting from Sallie Smith, a Boulder artist. We used this image back in 2005, and the wine we chose back then was the 2003 Ensemble. This is our tenth year of supporting the Flagstaff Star fund . This year especially it will be helpful, as for the first time in many years the Flagstaff Star was vandalized again. BookCliff Vineyards donates $1.00 for each bottle of the Flagstaff Star wine sold. The total donation will pay for the utility bill to light the Flagstaff Star for one season. Create your collection of uniquely labelled wine or give it as a holiday gift to a co-worker, friend or relative. The Flagstaff Sar wine is available at our tasting room and also at the following local liquor stores:

2011 Zinfandel

Wow! A Zinfandel from Colorado! We recently bottled 251 cases of our first ever Zin and we are really excited about it. Our vineyard manager, Prescott, has some Zin vines and we thought why not try a CO Zin. It turned out to be really nice with everything you would expect from a great Zinfandel. Boldly fruit-forward with jammy dark cherry, blackberry, anise and pepper flavors. This is a great wine for burgers and barbeque.

Try the new release of "A Touch of Red"

Two weeks ago we bottled the new release of the Touch of Red or (TOR) for insiders. I really enjoy this release, as it has a crisp finish and a very fruity nose. Just great for this hot weather we have been having. John calls it Kool-Aid with a kick when people ask what it is like. Maybe a fruit punch with a kick. The reason the TOR tastes so fruity is that 25% are held back as grape juice and 75% are fermented dry  and then both parts are blended together. I enjoy the TOR with dark chocolate or Mexican food. Make sure to chill it before you treat yourself to a glass while sitting on the porch. Enjoy!!
